Rain Plan Wedding Locations in NYC (That Don’t Require a Permit)

It’s a truth universally acknowledged: if you're planning an outdoor wedding in New York City, you need a rain plan. And no, we don’t mean a $10,000 backup venue — we mean something real, accessible, and actually usable when the sky turns gray.

At Cakewalk, we keep it simple and flexible. All our elopements come with a rain contingency — and over the years, we’ve found the best covered or semi-covered public spaces in NYC that don’t require a permit and still feel special.

Here’s our list of the best Plan B (or A, if you’re into it) ceremony spots in NYC when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

⛱ Bethesda Terrace Arcade (Central Park)

This spot is the MVP of all rain plan locations. Located right in Central Park, the Bethesda Terrace Arcade is covered, iconic, and surprisingly protected even during heavy rain.

  • Vibe: Historic, moody, cinematic (and still somehow romantic)

  • Photos: Arched ceilings, tiled mosaics, and a peek at The Lake behind you

  • Bonus: Works for groups up to ~15 if you're lowkey

We also do full ceremonies here — read more about eloping at Bethesda Terrace.

🌉 Under the Manhattan Bridge Archway (DUMBO)

This towering stone arch in DUMBO was basically made for unexpected ceremonies. It’s fully covered, has amazing acoustics, and makes you feel like you’re in a secret cathedral.

  • Vibe: Industrial romance

  • Best for: 2–12 guests

  • Photos: Cobblestone streets, Dumbo skyline, riverside walk

This is one of our go-to Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO ceremony spots.

🏛 Grand Central Terminal (Guerrilla-Style)

Okay, hear us out: Grand Central is chaotic, beautiful, and perfectly dry. While you can't reserve it for a wedding (and can’t block pedestrian traffic), you can find a quieter corner and say your vows in the middle of the city’s hum. We’ve done it. It works.

  • Vibe: Cinematic elopement energy

  • Permits: None… because you’re just “passing through” 😉

  • Best for: Just the couple + an officiant and photographer

🎭 Lincoln Center (Under the Overhang)

There’s a dramatic covered space between the theater entrances with overhead lighting, smooth concrete, and plenty of space to tuck into. Bonus: when it rains, the whole area clears out and feels private.

  • Vibe: Sleek, modern, stylish in black and white

  • Best for: Couples who want a clean aesthetic and iconic NYC architecture

🚇 Subway Platforms + Entrances (Yes, Really)

Not for everyone — but we’ve done some pretty incredible “quick and gritty” vows at subway entrances and on quiet platforms (especially on lines with less foot traffic). Bonus points for incorporating the place where you first met, commuted together, or just love the vibe of.

  • Vibe: NYC romance at its most raw

  • Permits: None. Just good timing.

  • Best tip: Stick to elevated platforms (like in Queens or Brooklyn) for more light

🏙 Atrium at 60 Wall Street (If It Reopens)

This indoor public atrium was a hidden gem for a long time — covered, full of light, and technically public. Status changes frequently — ask us and we’ll let you know if it’s currently accessible. Quiet during off-hours and makes a lovely wet weather backup.

☂ Bonus: What to Know About Rainy Day Elopements

  • Umbrellas are your friend — clear ones look great in photos

  • Hair and makeup prep should include humidity-proofing

  • The light is actually better — Cloudy days = soft, even skin tones

  • Rain can add meaning — We’ve had couples say “we’ll weather anything” as they marry under drizzle. It’s unforgettable.

At Cakewalk, we show up rain or shine. Our officiants handle all of this on the day — including last-minute location changes.

We’ll Handle the Weather — You Handle the Love

Don’t let a little rain mess with your plans. New York has plenty of covered corners that are just as romantic as the original plan — and sometimes, even more so. If you’re eloping with us, we’ll build a rain strategy that feels thoughtful, adaptable, and still gorgeous.
